Happy Sports Day!!!

Today was a very special day here at Suku Suku World, we held our own Sports Day event at Green Park. The children have been preparing for the event a lot recently and it was fantastic to see everyone playing games, enjoying the performances and having fun together. We started the day with the Opening Ceremony, the oldest members of Butterfly class made an English speech to commence the event. After that we all warmed up with a dance and some stretches before marching off, excited about the day ahead and eager to see which team would emerge victorious.

Next came Butterfly class' Cheerleading performance, a dance with pompoms set to pumping music encouraging everyone to have a 'Good Time', and indeed a good time was had by all. It was very impressive to see all of the children in perfect sync with each other remembering and performing a full routine together, and the best part was just how much they enjoyed it. My personal favourite part is when they all came together for a can-can type dance.

The next event was the Caterpillar race, the children were split into different age categories and it was a straightforward sprint for the finish line. Some of the children needed some encouragement to keep on going but most of them understood the game and tried to make it to the end as fast as they could. There were some very close calls in this race!

After Butterfly's race event was Caterpillar class' dance routine, set to 'Mickey Mouse Club March'. This absolutely adorable display had all of the children dressed as different cute characters, first parading out and waving 'Hello!' to all of their smiling fans, and then giving us a wonderful performance. It was very impressive to see such young children performing their dance routine so well, and it was perhaps the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Next up was another Caterpillar class event, the 'Baby Raising Relay'. This race would test the children's parental intuitions against each other, as they race to collect milk bottles, a diaper and, of course, the baby, put them all in the pram and dart to the finish line. They start by being told how many bottles to put in the bag, then cross the balance beams, pick up the baby, walk around the cones, pick up a diaper of a certain colour (as stated by the teacher), stick it all in the pram and race to the finish line! The kids had a lot of fun with this event and it was great fun to watch, too!

Next up, Tug-of-War! This simple game of brute force pitted one half of Butterfly class against the other, seeing which team could pull the rope the hardest. Bear team managed to get 2 points in a row, but then Bunny team started to claw it back with a point, only for Bear team to steal the victory with their third and final point.

We then held the Caterpillar class parent's game. This game involved the parents taking on the role of mother Kangaroo and the children being the baby. They started by each dressing up accordingly, then jumping through the hula hoops, the children would then grab a delicious apple, and finally the parent would lift them up and hop to the finish line! This game became surprisingly intense with parents getting very competitive and jumping very fast, but many of them got stumped and lost precious time trying to put on the costume at the start. All-in-all everyone had a lot of fun together with their children.

Next came the Butterfly parents' game. This game involved dancing around to the music, waiting for it to stop, and then finding a circle and trying to touch the floor a certain amount of times together with their child. The game started off relatively simple, with numbers like 3 and 5 simply involving lifting up a foot or putting down a hand. But as numbers like 2 and 6 came in the game got considerably more difficult. Eventually it got to the point where numbers like 8 and 1 were being played, meaning the parents had to pick up their children and stand on one foot! Because the rules also dictate that you must hold the pose for 5 seconds, many parent/child combinations couldn't quite managed to stay upright the whole time. The team who had the less falling was then deemed the winners!

Then, after a lunch break, we opened the second half of the event with a Cheer Battle! A chance for each team to show who was the loudest! We all made as much noise as we could, and then danced to a song whilst seeing who could sing the loudest.

We then saw a skillful gymnastics routine from Butterfly class, holding poses for considerable lengths of time, memorising and executing yet another lengthy routine and even making a human pyramid in an impressive grand finale!

Next up was Butterfly Class' relay race, each team would have one member run around the bandstand and then pass the baton to the next runner. This event was very fast paced and an excellent display of sheer speed from every member of each team. The race was so close all the way through that I'm sure everyone was on the edge of their seats!

Our last game involved all of the children and parents coming together to throw as many balls into the baskets being held by Jordan Sensei and Jim Sensei as they possibly could. Being the final game the stakes were high and everyone performed exceedingly well, each of the buckets had over 80 balls inside! But a winner was victorious nevertheless.

Finally, we ended the event with our closing ceremony. Our oldest students made their English closing speech, the winning team was announced (Go Bear Team!) and the trophy handed out. We warmed down with some stretches and then it was time to say goodbye!
